Start Your Journey with Fly Tying 101

Whether you're completely new to fly tying or looking to refresh rusty skills, our Fly Tying 101 class is the perfect starting point. This 90-minute introductory course provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of fly tying.

What You'll Learn:

  • Essential tools and their proper use
  • Basic materials and when to use them
  • Step-by-step instruction on tying simple, effective trout flies for our local waters
  • Foundational techniques that will serve you throughout your fly tying journey

Each student gets their own fully stocked workstation complete with vise, tools, and all necessary materials—no need to bring anything except your enthusiasm! Our experienced instructors will guide you through every step, ensuring you leave with both knowledge and confidence.

  • Duration: 90 minutes (6:30-8:00 PM)
  • Location: Reno Fly Shop (238 S. Arlington Ave.)
  • Class Size: Limited to 6 students for personalized attention
  • Investment: $50 registration (includes a $25 gift certificate for in-store purchases or future lessons)

Advance Your Skills with Fly Tying 201

Ready to take your fly tying to the next level? Our Fly Tying 201 class is designed for those who've completed FT101 and are eager to tackle more complex patterns and advanced techniques.

This 2-hour deep dive explores intermediate to advanced methods that will expand your fly tying repertoire significantly. You'll work with both natural and synthetic materials, learning the techniques that create durable, effective patterns for both fresh and saltwater fishing.

What's Covered:

  • Advanced tool techniques for precision and efficiency
  • Material selection secrets for creating lifelike patterns
  • Epoxy application methods for durability
  • Multiple fly patterns specifically chosen for success in our regional waters
  • Professional tips for creating flies that last longer and fish better

While we provide fully appointed workstations, you're welcome to bring your own vise and tools if you've started building your personal kit. This hands-on session gives you ample time to practice and perfect new techniques under expert guidance.
