Reno Fly Shop | Fly Fishing Report for Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River | late January 2019

Feb 1, 2019 | FISHING REPORT, Pyramid Lake, Reno Fly Shop, Truckee River

We believe the approaching storms should really improve conditions at the lake and on the River. Recent high pressures and blue-bird conditions slowed the fly fishing at Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River. It seems to be okay one day and not so hot the next.

Early / late in the day or some cloud cover is consistently producing the best success. Wind/waves also help at the lake. Many of the Summit Lake fish are beginning to color up pre-spawn. We believe things are going to get really good this winter/spring.

Flies we suggest for Pyramid Lake: Cat Whisker Booby, Spanish Olive Booby, Midnight Cowboy, Complex Twist Bugger, Balanced Leech, Marabou Midge, Holo Midge

The Truckee River is fishing very Winterlike. Small dark thin bodied nymphs seem to be the most consistent. We anticipate Skwala will begin showing up and we have begun to stock some really great stonefly patterns for the chase. Fish are holding in medium/slow water with a bit of depth. We anticipate that the Rainbow Trout will start to color up and stage pre-spawn. It is a great time to explore new water. A lot of the typical summer/fall spots have slowed and the fish have moved to other water due to conditions and angler pressure.
