Fly Fishing Report | Truckee River and Pyramid Lake | mid January 2024 | NEW Mopcorn Fly and Switch Rods

Jan 10, 2025 | Fishing Report, News, Reno Fly Shop News

Happy new year! Thank you to everyone that made 2024 a busy fish filled year!

Now that we are past the holidays, fishing reports will resume as usual.

Pyramid Lake

As is true with most January’s, indicator fishing has been the most effective way to target the LCT. The trout have been moving a lot recently making them a little harder to pin down, and they may not be where you have been fishing the last few weeks, at least not in great numbers. I’ve been targeting beaches with a drop off around 11-14 feet, but we are catching them anywhere from 6-10 feet. I am convinced that the LCT will move feet to get to a fly that they want.

Fly selection hasn’t changed much. Lighter colored leeches have still been the best producer. If you haven’t already, this is about the time of year I start fishing smaller leeches like our mini leech. There has also been some midge action. Red, black, flashy midges will be best until the water warms more and the midges begin to hatch.

Water temps will begin to warm as the days get longer and we have a break in the storms. Look for the midge bite to pick up specially if the surface temps start flirting with the low 50’s.

Flies we suggest for Pyramid Lake: Balanced Leech, Holographic Midge, Micro Holographic Midge, Mini Jig Leech, Mopcorn (check out the new color variant), Pyramid Lake Bugger

Truckee River

The Truckee River has fished well in the last few weeks as flows have stabilized after a storm in late December. With clear skies and moderate weather in the forecast, we expect to see good fishing conditions continue. The annual hatch of Blue Winged Olives should begin any day now as we patiently wait.

Nymph fishing has been productive throughout the river with many anglers focusing their efforts on the Nevada side. Fish have been found in the slower water with river temperatures in the high 30’s to mid 40’s.

Pairing an attractor style fly like a Bead Head Squirmy Worm with a small nymph like the Micro Mayfly is a great way to figure out what fish want to eat. One of our favorite ways to fish small flies in the winter is on a drop shot rig. By rigging your split shot below your flies, you can make weight adjustments while still fishing small patterns near the bottom. A bonus of this technique is that you tend to lose fewer flies since the split shot is on the bottom and not the fly.

Flies we suggest on the Truckee River: Squirminator, BH Squirmy Worm, Micro Mayfly, Psycho Mayfly, Galloup Jigged BWO, Hot Butt, Spanish Bullet, Thin Mint Bugger

Enjoy the next few weeks of sun and get out while you can!

NEW PRODUCTS IN THE SHOP

We have brought in quite a bit of new product over the past month or so. We want to get you caught up to speed on some of these items that we have all tested and are stoked to begin to offer to you.

RFS Mopcorn Beetle – Black/Pink variant

It was only a matter of time before we offered up one of the hottest new Pyramid Lake Stripping flies in one of the best fly color combinations. Several guides will swear by the black/pink color combo. So much so, that it has been requested that we hold off on having this pattern commercially tied and offered here in the shop and online. Hope you get to check it out soon

Beulah G2 Platinum Switch Rod – 10′-8″ 7/8wt

We have been looking for a mid price point switch rod to fill what we felt was a gap on our rod wall. We looked at quite a few rods and are excited to have chosen the Beulah G2 Platinum Switch Rod in 10’8″ 7/8wt. We are very familiar with the Beulah spey rods and personally fish them in a variety of weights and lengths. We took the 10’8″ 7/8 Switch rod to Pyramid over the holiday break in all the conditions we could have hoped. Bluebird days to strong headwinds out of the east. We were not surprised that the rod performed well and often exceeded expectations of our staff and guides.

Power, speed and a fair bit of accomodation when it comes to anchor placement gave all of us a very nice experience casting heavy two fly rigs with an indicator.

We fished the 7/8 as a 7wt paired with the Scientific Anglers Integrated Switch 7wt-585gr line. It easily casted to distance and mended well. We only have this rod available online for now but it soon will be available in our online store. If you live close swing by and if you live out of town call and we will ship it to you for free.

We encourage you to pair this rod with the Scientific Anglers Integrated Switch 7wt-585gr Fly Line available in store and online.
