The Truckee River flow has dropped since our last report but remains fishing well. The Reno gauge is about 350CFS. This is a typical drop for this time of year as the Water Master is adjusting for seasonal conditions and lower demands.
The trout are still feeding in fast moving water. Drop shot techniques have been very effective to get your flies near the bottom quickly. At these flows hopper dropper comes into play specifically if you’re targeting shallow, fast moving water. Some fish will take the hopper but it’s really providing a more stealthy approach to target lower, clearer water.
Crayfish are still an abundant food source for our wild trout. When our crayfish patterns have been paired with small mayflies we have experienced the most success. Combine a standard crayfish patterns, Mini Crayfish and Cray Z Emma, your smaller mayfly should be in sizes #16-#22. That is typical this time of year as well. A lot of the available insects in August are small (midge, caddis,PMD). I like to suspend a fly below my hopper by 3 feet as this seems to still allow the nymph to get down a bit in fast water.
Expect the trout to take the fly the second it hits the water when fishing shallow fast water. The trout will only be in this kind of water when they are actively feeding, and because the water is moving quickly they only have a split second to decide if they are going to commit to your fly.
Flies we suggest: Cray Z Emma, Mini Crayfish, Redemption PMD, OCD Caddis, BH Krystal Caddis, BH Zebra Midge, Foam Hopper, Super Hopper, Thread Quill, Truckee River August Selection
