Truckee River

The river is looking great! After a few hot days we have now passed the day (July 22) that is typically the seasonal peak air temperature. If historic trends continue, we should begin cooling into Fall.

The fish have been sitting in fast water and are eating happily. Fly selection has varied somewhat unusually day to day. Some days you can’t keep the fish off of a crayfish pattern, and the next day they won’t even look at it. The summer hatch of Pale Morning Dun mayflies has been somewhat light this year. The trout have switched to feeding on smaller insects which are more plentiful, Midges and Tricos when the PMDs aren’t around. Fishing small flies from 18-22 have been working well when the crayfish bite is off. Streamer fishing has been a little slow too, but still worthwhile, especially if we get some afternoon clouds/stormy days.

Flies we suggest: Cray Z Emma, Mini Crayfish, Hair Wing PMD, TNT PMD, BH Krystal Caddis, Missing Link, OCD Caddis, BH Zebra Midge, Polywing Emerger, RS2, Griffith Gnat, Hot Butt Nymph, Thin Mint Bugger, Kreelex, Truckee River Selection

Other Local Waters

Carp fishing is nearing its peak, and is a fun yet challenging pallet cleanser to trout fishing. Fishing in the morning is best, even though Carp are tolerant to warm water it can make them sluggish if it gets too warm.

Flies we suggest: Carp Worm, Squirmy Hybrid, Carp Tickler, Super Hopper, Red Eye Damsel, BH Prince Nymph, Jigged Bugger

Local reservoirs are fishing well. Especially with the cooler temps. The trout fishing has been good to very good. The bass fishing has been picking up and we believe it will only get better. If you haven’t targeted bass in our local reservoirs you really need to give it a try. Swing by the shop and our staff will suggest flies and tactics to begin your exploration.

Flies we suggest: Red Eye Damsel, Living Damsel, TB Balanced Leech, Mini Jig Leech, Dolly Llama

High alpine lakes are fishing well. If you can find one that has adjacent meadows that hoppers are hatching and plentiful. On a windy afternoon we recently put a pile of fish to hand plopping hoppers down along a weedy edge to a high alpine lake. Terrestrials and small nymph droppers should get the job done.

Flies we suggest: Super Hopper, Foam Hopper, Jigged Bugger, Mini Jig Leech, Para Madam X

MORE Fly Fishing Classes added to the Calendar

We have added our popular Fly Fishing 101 and 201 classes.

FF101 will introduce the new/beginner student to basic concepts to undestand gear (what and why), knots and casting stroke. This class is 1 hour and takes place at the Reno Fly Shop. All necessary equipment is provided.

FF201 builds upon our FF101 (required pre-requisite) and will pick up where that class leaves off. After a quick review of the basics the student will be exposed to the following topics;

  • Review of to fly rods, reels and lines and their different applications

  • Essential knots and rigging - with the opportunity to tie your own and which knot to use when.

  • Fly selection and how these change seasonally and even through the day.

  • Basic casting at a local park on the grass.

FF101 is required to take our FF201.
