The Truckee River is below 1,000 CFS through the downtown gauge for the first time this summer! The river temp has climbed a bit due to the water master moving flow from Boca to Tahoe. Boca is a cold bottom release and Tahoe is a warmer surface release. Water temps are topping out at 68 degrees but with a cool down next week we are nowhere near water temps that are dangerous for trout.
Fish are moving into faster water as the river comes down into its natural channel and the water temps are perfectly within the trout’s active metabolism range. There are a lot of prey items as many hatches coincide this time of year. (Little Yellow Sallys, PMD, Drakes, Caddis) The crayfish are also on the move, making this time of year a bountiful buffet for the fish. Euro Nymphing has been the best technique, with its unique ability to get into deep water quickly, indicator fishing requires a lot of weight, heavy flies, and a long leader but it is doable. The steamer bite has been a bit off, but that should change as the larger fish will settle into their individual territories as the river comes down to normal flows.
