Truckee River
Flows are changing a bit. We’re looking at 275 CFS through the downtown gauge. Flows may fluctuate a bit as diversions and ditches begin to shut off in our area. Water temps are perfect and holding in the mid 60sF to mid 50sF.
Fish have been feeding on small flies (#18-#20), BH Zebra Midge and Hot Butt, with a few fish still on crayfish patterns, Mini Crayfish and Cray Z Emma. Streamer fishing has picked up as well as we get closer to the brown trout spawn and the fish become territorial. We have observed what might be prepared redds, but have not seen any activity spawning fish at the moment. Fish have been scattered and found in all types of water throughout the day. As the water warms they move into faster water.
When the wind stays down in the afternoon, we have been able to find fish nosing up to the surface. While a bit light compared to summer Caddis and PMDs have been hatching in the afternoon with the fish responding.
Flies we suggest: BH Zebra Midge, Hot Butt, black Perdigon, EC Caddis, Hair Wing PMD, French Nymph, Weiss UV Jig, OCD Caddis, Jigged PT
Pyramid Lake
The Opener was on Tuesday, and water temps have been high. At noon, surface temperatures were at 71°. This is keeping the LCT below 60 feet in most cases with several fish being marked at 20′-30′ with a Garmin Striker Cast with a few fish caught from shore in the early morning hours stripping baitfish, Pyramid Lake Bugger and Tui Chub. Bait balls are present throught out the day with only a slight algae bloom. Your typical streamers, foam flies (Booby Fly and Mopcorns) and the Belly Ache Minnow have been working from shore, and heavy marabou jigs of you are in a boat or float tube to help get you deep and stay tight.
Flies we suggest: Pyramid Lake Bugger (Midnight Cowboy and Cat Whisker), Belly Ache Minnow, Kreelex Minnow, Balanced Chub, Holographic Midge, Tui Chub
Reno Fly Shop Custom Slip Indicator Leader
We are excited to announce that we have begun to offer a leader setup that staff have successfully fished for some time. The Slip Indicator Leader is designed to present flies at depths below what can be fished with a traditional indicator setup. Using the bobber stops to set depth, the Jaydactor will free slide on the leader between the tippet ring and the bobber stops. With this leader, you can confidently fish depths down to 25 feet. Weight is an important consideration with this leader and should be used accordingly. You can either add a split shot at the tippet ring or use heavily weighted flies to get into the strike zone fast.
