Fly Fishing Report – August 6, 2015

Aug 7, 2015 | FISHING REPORT, Reno Fly Shop

The following report represents conditions as we understand them at the time we wrote this report. Conditions change day to day. Low water conditions and warm temperatures should always something to monitor when you arrive at a location. Carry a thermometer and please use it. Please give the trout a rest when the water temp exceeds 68 degrees.

Area Lakes and Reservoirs

You can find eager trout rising through the day on many of the higher elevation lakes and reservoirs. When the fish aren’t on the surface don’t hesitate to put on a sinking line (Rio Camolux) and strip a streamer or nymph.

Some of the mid elevation lakes are super fun in low light conditions for smallmouth bass. Streamers are most effective but who can possible resist surface action for smallies when you can find a bass boil?

Flies: Parachute Adams #14-#16, Royal Humpy #14-#16, Yellow Simulator #14-#16, Sheep Creek Special #8-#12, Hare’s Ear Birds Nest #14, Zebra Midge Red #16, Pops Bugger Black #8-#10, Crystal Bugger (Olive, Brown and Black) #10

Truckee River – Nevada State Line to Verdi

The main Truckee River has been in good shape with both flows and temps. Water temps have been in the low 60s for a while. Low conditions make the river susceptible to being blown out easily with upstream t-storms. Muddy flows tend to clear up within a few hours after the storms have moved on. As always during low flow summer conditions we encourage everyone to carry a stream thermometer and give trout a rest when the water temps exceed 68 degrees.

Flies: Tailwater Tiny Olive #18, Parachute Adams #12-#18, Foam Flying Ant #16, Hunchback PMD #16, Hot Wing Caddis #12-#14, Jigged Caddis Pupa Tan #14-#16

Truckee River Warm Water Carping

Seems that the secret is slowing getting out. We are seeing more and more folks chasing the desert bonefish. They aren’t always (or ever) easy or make themselves obvious, but the effort is well worth it. These fish are plentiful in the right conditions and will take a fly that is presented well. High sun, no clouds and light winds are the variables that will start to put things in your favor. 10# fluoro leaders and 6wts and up are the whips we suggest.

Flies: Deaddrift Crayfish Olive, Great Basin Drifter, Swimming Carp Fly, Back Stabber Wine and Rust, Dad Cray Gray #10
