FISHING REPORT – MAY 20, 2016

Main Truckee River -(between Little Truckee confluence and downtown Reno)

The fly fishing on the Big T has been up and down.  The storms, warmer temps then cooler temps have had the water flows and clarity bouncing around.  This is all great for the biology of the river but can make things a bit challenging for us anglers.

High water is not a time to find other things to do around the house.  Fish need to eat and the larger trout will eat every day. Bright flies and often large offerings will be taken with enthusiasm during high water and off color conditions.

CURRENT TRUCKEE RIVER FLOWS AT FARAD GAGE
(NEAR FLORISTON)

As flows stabilize top water action should pick up.  We are coming into a special time on the Truckee and there are very predictable hatches that will pop when the conditions are right.  Looks for Ants, Mahagoney Duns, Green Drakes and Caddis to make their appearance shortly.

Flies: Power Ant, Flying Ant, G-String Worm, Floss Worm, Pheasant Tail #12 and #14, GTI Caddis, Elk Hair, Missing Link #12 and #14

Lake Davis and Frenchman’s Reservoir

Both of these reservoirs are a approximately 50% capacity and fishing well.  Conditions should continue to improve as summer finally settles in and the bugs can come out with confidence another storm isn’t going to ruin the party.  Good tube fishing in both spots with best action kicking a short ways offshore and casting small leech patterns back towards the bank.  Also it is worth trying a breakaway indicator with a long leader with a Blood Midge and or an Ice Cream Cone.

Pyramid Lake

Things have picked back up at Pyramid as the Summit Lake spawn has ended.  The fish have moved back out into the Lake to do what they do best which is eat things.  The fly fishing has been lights out.  With several double digit days reported.  The low light conditions seem to be the best with early and late in the day providing the most cover for the fish.  Their appetites also seem to have switched back to larger flies.  Some will be caught with midge and nymphs but the strip bit and Balanced Leeched under an indicator are the top producers.
Flies: Pyramid Minnow, Wooly Bugger chartreuse/black, Clouser Minnow and the Balanced Leech
