Fly Fishing Report | Truckee River | mid July 2024

Jul 11, 2024 | Fishing Report, Truckee River

The Truckee River has continued to drop since the last report, but we will see the flows stabilize around their current 460 cfs through the downtown gauge. The river is very close to its natural channel and because of this  finding fish has become easier. The bugs have changed a lot in the past few weeks as well. A lot of the hatches we have talked about for the past few months have ended. We are using a lot of size 16 and smaller nymphs to imitate the PMDs and other small bugs that thrive in the warm summer weeks.

The Carot – exclusive to the Reno Fly Shop

I’ve had a lot of luck with soft hackles recently too as these will imitate smaller fish and possibly even the rainbow trout that hatched this spring. Allow your flies to swing at the end of your drift. This will make your flies look more like an emerging insect but also look like a small fleeing fish. The crayfish are out and about and the trout are looking for them! Crayfish will molt and become the main food source for large trout in a few weeks, but they are always a great option!

Keep your eye out for more 101,201, and 301 classes

And get ready for the East Walker! We have dates available starting up again in September.
