Tying the Carot with the Reno Fly Shop Jan 7, 2015

Dec 2, 2014 | Events, FISHING REPORT, Reno Fly Shop

Winter storms have finally arrived and the Truckee River is breathing once again.  Thanks to all of the anglers that gave the Truckee River a bit of a break.  We hope that things will turn around this winter and she won’t have to experience the low water and warm temps any time soon.

We recently spent a bit of time looking around our favorite river to see how she fared over the low water period. Overall the fish we observed were in good shape and appeared and acted healthy. We fished a variety of styles and patterns.  One of the most consistent approaches used a dry/dropper.  The dry was more of an indicator/dry because the Baetis weren’t out.  The nymph however was a jigged Carot that was designed by Mike Sexton.

Jigged Carot We fish this pattern a lot in the dry/dropper setup, under an indicator or as our tag fly in a Czech leader setup.

Like many great flies this simple easy to tie patterns is one of the BEST.  Tied in a variety of sizes or colors and it will take fish in rivers and lakes.

If you are interested in learning to tie this pattern we have scheduled our first class of 2015 to show you how.  January 7 at 6:30 in the shop we will walk you through all of the steps to tie this crazy simple and effective pattern.  This class will be on this one pattern and all of the steps in tying it.  We will also cover fishing techniques with the Carot and jigged nymphs in general.

We also have begun to put together some tying videos on our website.  We intend to schedule a class for each one of the patterns we tie in our videos so you can use it as reference. Keep an eye on our blog and event calendar for more info.

Enjoy!
