FISHING REPORT SEPTEMBER 17, 2015Main Truckee River (between Little Truckee confluence and east Verdi)
Seems that the warmer water temps are finally a thing of the past. We have seen temps only creeping into the low 60s by late afternoon. Water is still low but the trout are in good shape and are more than willing to eat flies.
High sticking and indicator nymphing have been working with stoneflies, crayfish and dark nymphs. If you can find the right water, streamers will be a fun way to get a grab.
FLIES: Sextone #10, Stonedaddy #10, Dead Drift Crayfish Olive, Carotene #12 and #14 and Flashback Pheasant Tail #14 and #16, Pop’s Bugger Black, Slap-n-Tickle
Little Truckee River
The LT Habitat Improvement Project that we reported on in EP001 of the RFS Podcast is done and the water is back up. Dave Lass and the TU Chap. #103 really should be thanked for their efforts. Think about supporting TU Chapter #103 or your local Trout Unlimited Chapter.
The system will take a bit to adjust to having water again so things might be hit or miss for a while. Give it time and it will be a great autumn on the LT.
Lake Davis
Jon at Baiocchi Troutfitters has reported good fishing at Davis. He has seen water temps lower and the lake in really good shape. Trout are eating blood midge and Callibaetis until about 2 when the winds pick up then heading to deeper water (10-18′). He has been putting his clients on these trout as they take dry flies all morning.
FLIES: Blood Midge #10-#12, Callibaetis #12-#14, Flashback Pheasant Tail #14, Sheep Creek Special #10-#12
Pyramid Lake (October 1 Opener)
Things haven’t changed much from our earlier report and we cover many details in the podcast. So we have left things the same from before.
September weather will let us know mostly what to expect at the Lake on the opener. Typically warmer water temps have the baitfish concentrated in shallows with the trout swinging up from depth to pick them off. When we find the baitfish we typically have a good shot at catching trout in the shallow water. Most LCT will be found at 15-30 feet where they will be sitting in the cooler temps.
Indicator fishing from tubes and pontoon boats can be productive but we have found that stripping bugger/boobie combos on shooting heads is the more productive. We will have your boobies again this year and we have ordered a bunch to be commercially tied so we hope quanitites are not an issue. We think that this exclusive fly to the Reno Fly Shop will again be one of the season top producers.
